Learning Objectives

1. Identify some current health diparities affecting the DHH community.
2. Share strategies to enhance communication with the DHH people.
3. Outline a rationale for engaging DHH healthcare professionals as part of the healthcare workforce to close communication gaps.

Accredidation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through joint providership of the Texas A&M University School of Medicine and the Center for Health Communication at the University of Texas at Austin to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The module titled, “Health Literacy and Clear Health Communication” has been designated by the Texas A&M University School of Medicine for 1.0 hour of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

Requirements for successful completion: To receive contact hours for this continuing education activity, the participant must register, complete the entire course, pass the post-test with 80% or better, and complete and submit the evaluation form. Once successful completion has been verified, a "Certificate of Successful completion" will be awarded for 1.0 contact hours.

Learning outcome: Upon completion of this course, the registered nurse will report a plan to change practice related to increased knowledge of barriers that patients with mental illness face when seeking and receiving care, including use of stigmatized language by healthcare workers, which can contribute to these barriers.
